The all new Mahindra SUV: THAR 2020

As the lockdown is slowly lifting up across pan India which came into effect due to world wide spread of Covid-19 pandemic since March 2020, the economy is also coming back on its feet. The industries have started manufacturing and providing their products and services respectively apart from FMCG and essential goods. The Automobile Sector has now started its proper functioning by manufacturing its vehicles of all segments with new technologies and further advancement in the existing models.

Mahindra in the year 2020 is launching its new SUV segment with the new generation Mahindra Thar 2020 which will go on sale in India on 2nd October 2020. Mahindra is now offering six color variants for the new Thar. The price is expected to be from 9.5L to 13.5L (ex-showroom price). Mahindra Thar will be offered in three variants i.e., AX, AX Optional and LX, which is the top-spec model better suited for the daily driver in the city. Despite of all the type of variants, it comes with a 4×4 as standard. It also gets front-facing rear seats and a factory fitted hardtop, to make it a practical four-seater SUV for the first time in its life. However, the adventure-oriented AX variants will get the usual jump seats which make it a 6-seater.

This new variant of 2020 will get an option for petrol and diesel engines as well automatic transmission for the first time. This petrol option will be very much new with 2.0-litre turbocharged unit rated 150PS/320Nm whereas BS6 diesel engine is a 2.2-litre unit which makes 130PS and 320Nm.

The new Mahindra Thar 2020 features an all-black interior complemented by provisions such as carbon fibre finish for AC vents, steering mounted control, 7-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay infotainment system, electrically semi-digital instrument console, cruise control, etc. The touchscreen system not only enables smartphone and smartwatch connectivity but also displays information about details like wheel angle, torque, roll, pitch, etc. and that too in real-time. It also comes with washable interiors and removable roof panels.

For Safety point of view, it is equipped with dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and front seatbelt indicator, panic break signal, speed alert, snow chain providers for tyres, speed sensing door lock and ISOFIX child seat anchors on rear seats, etc.    

As far as comfort is concerned for the driver point of view, it is equipped with 12V accessory socket, tool kit organizer, tilt adjustable steering wheel, day/night inside rearview mirror, remote keyless entry, power windows (front), USB charging port, lumbar support, follow-me-home headlamps, electrically operated air conditioner, tire direction monitoring system, etc.

The new Mahindra Thar is based on the 3rd generation platform with body-on-frame construction. The track has been increased and the SUV is now wider than the predecessor model which indeed results in a more comfortable cabin with better safety standards. The wheelbase has been increased for better ingress to the second row. The SUV also gets 255/65 R18 tyres that have been upsized and are wider as well for improved on-road stability, better compatibility with the wheelbase and an improved stance. Do note the ground clearance is likely to be different on the entry-level trims that will come with 16-inch wheels.
